Additionally, in 1885, the Whaleys’ daughter Violet died by suicide on the house’s second floor. In 1858, baby Thomas Whaley Jr. died of scarlet fever in the house, and it is believed that his ghost still haunts the property. In 1890, Thomas Whaley passed away in their new home on State Street, never to return to the original Whaley estate. Abandoned for close to 20 years, the Whaley House was neglected and in poor condition until Francis Whaley, their eldest son, decided to go back in 1909.

The normal rate is $13 but for active military, seniors (55+) and children (6-12) it’s only $8. Old Town San Diego flourished in many ways thanks to the Whaley House.

Thomas Whaley Jr. suffered from scarlet fever at 18 months and died on January 29, 1858. A young woman’s apparition is reported most on the home’s second floor. Her longing to linger in the home is attributed to the fact that she would lock herself away in her second-floor room while mourning the loss of her short-lived marriage. In 1868, the home was completely renovated, and yet again, happiness and good fortune were proven to be short-lived for Thomas and his family. In 1885, one of their six children, Violet, decided to take her own life.

Whaley House Museum
Your guide will explain the legends and superstitions that surround the house and its previous descendants, as well as the folklore about previous ghost sightings in the house. On your tour, you’ll learn about the different ghosts known to frequent the haunted Whaley House walls and what keeps them around. Tours are self-guided, but docents are available to answer any questions you may have and expand upon the information available in the museum.
Keep in mind there were several events that occurred in between what I am mentioning and also, several reconstructions/renovations/and business ventures made by Thomas Whaley are not mentioned. During the house’s later periods of restoration, workers and visitors claimed to hear strange, unexplained sounds, sights and even smells. Not helping matters is the fact that the Whaley House was built upon an old cemetery.
